A home for Tibetan contemporary art
Khadhok embarks on a journey for creativity and cultural expression within the heart of Dharamshala, India.
our vision
At the heart of Khadhok is a simple but powerful mission: to create space; for Tibetan contemporary artists to share their work, for a community to grow across generations and for art to spark dialogue, reflection and connection.
Based in Dharamshala, India, Khadhok is a collective that celebrates the richness and complexity of Tibetan life through art. We bring artists together not just to exhibit, but to support one another, to dream and to shape a shared creative future.
We believe in the power of art to strengthen identity and community. That’s why we engage with schools, organize workshops, and hold conversations that reach beyond gallery walls — planting seeds of creativity where they’re needed most, especially at the grassroots.
OUR JOURNEY
Khadhok began in 2023, born from love, loss, and the belief that art can bring people together. It was never just about exhibitions — it was about creating space. Space where Tibetan artists, especially those in exile, could speak in their own voices and be heard.
The spark was personal. Our first exhibition was dedicated to our dear friend and fellow artist Jigme Choedak (commonly known as JC), a young Tibetan illustrator and cartoonist, whose work was filled with humour, tenderness and sharp insight. JC had long dreamed of a platform where young Tibetan artists could create freely and be recognised for their work, not as footnotes, but as voices shaping our cultural landscape.
His passing left a silence — but also a sense of direction. His dream stayed with us and it helped spark what would become Khadhok.
To honour him, our first-ever exhibition was held at the Old Tibet Museum inside the Dalai Lama’s temple complex in Dharamshala. Over a thousand people came in just three days. The energy was electric: elders, students, locals and travellers all moved by the power of contemporary Tibetan art and by the spirit behind it.
That moment became our foundation. From one gathering, Khadhok has grown into a collective rooted in community, guided by creativity and carrying forward the vision JC once imagined: a living, breathing space for Tibetan art to thrive.
WHY KHA-DHOK?
The meaning of 'KHA-DHOK' is COLOUR in Tibetan. While the physical nature of colours may be similar, the true essence lies within each person's interpretation. This amplifies the joy of Khadhok, as it becomes a space where diverse colours and artistic approaches coexist, uniting under one roof.
