“All I know is how to speak out truthfully and scribble out my heart.”

Jigme Choedak

Jigme Choedak (1997 – 2023) was a self-taught artist, illustrator and cartoonist from Tsum Valley in Nepal which borders with Tibet. He did his schooling in Upper TCV and TCV Suja.

With a keen interest in Tibetan culture and driven by a deep passion for observation, he portrayed everyday situations in simple and unexpected ways commenting on complex inner emotional worlds, Buddhist values and political struggles among many things. Balancing between traditional Tibetan metaphors and elements from Western pop culture, he once described his art as a “chocolate-momo” – a blend of the “Tibetan” and the “World”. His main approach, however, remained simple – telling stories that touch people’s hearts.

Throughout his career he worked with many organisations and collaborated with other artists, leaving quite a bit off in the community. In the recent years JC was focusing on his long-term goal to create his own comic books and graphic novels.

Apart from his visual arts, he wrote poems, composed songs and acted in the forthcoming film DHARAMSALA directed by Tenzin Dazel.

JC’s wish was to empower young artists and create a platform for their works for which he started Genyik Studio in 2021. Genyik meaning “trash” in Tibetan, which is a reference to young artists who are often looked down by society and considered as ‘useless’.

His first exhibition was organised by his close ones within the 49 days after his passing at The Old Tibet Museum Dharamsala. The first solo exhibition of his works took place at The Wind Horse Gallery in Kathmandu at the end of 2023, followed by a group exhibition at The Other Space in Dharamsala at the start of 2024.
